Arizona State University received word that in February it had won a grant from the Blackstone Charitable Foundation in New York to pilot a new Formation Space concept which has been identified as AREA 48. ASU’s Applied Regional Economic Action 48 (AREA 48) refers to Arizona’s numerical position as the 48th state admitted to the union, is designed to be an experimental model for developing, educating and supporting early-stage innovators. AREA48 includes offering a new type of physical place with a mixed format for innovation learning, training, creation, testing and prototyping.

Registration for the 2013 Association of Cooperative Educators (ACE) institute is now open. It will take place August 4-7 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. ACE brings together co-operative educators, researchers and practitioners, primarily from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The theme of this year’s Institute is Regenerating the Economy through Cooperation. Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy

The Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy is an educational and technical training conference for workers interested in forming their own small businesses to grow and preserve family wealth. The 2013 conference will take place July 26-28 in Philadelphia and will highlight the Democratic workplaces, such as worker-owned cooperatives that are growing in many ways as a viable alternative to a society that lacks meaningful humanizing jobs and democracy in everyday life. In order to make this conference accessible to all participants there will be Spanish language translations of all materials, simultaneous interpretation, and childcare available. Call for Applications – MA in Human Rights and Conflict Management in Pisa, Italy

Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy is calling for applications for its MA in Human Rights and Conflict Management for the academic year 2013-2014. The Master of Arts in Human Rights and Conflict Management is designed to provide students from different cultures and backgrounds with a deep understanding of the linkages between human rights and conflict management theory and practice. The curriculum, strongly field oriented, prepares participants for working with NGOs, governments, aid agencies, the UN system and regional organisations, also operating in the context of complex emergencies and joint operations. Now Taking Nominations for the 2014 Social Entrepreneur of the Year

The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship is seeking outstanding candidates for the 2014 Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Award winners will join the Schwab Foundation’s community of the world’s most accomplished social entrepreneurs and will benefit from media exposure, pro bono services from the Forum’s Partners, peer-to-peer mentoring and interaction with other social entrepreneurs in network, as well as gain access to top business and political leaders through participation in World Economic Forum meetings. To qualify, the social enterprise must meet the following criteria:
· Can be a for-profit or non-profit, but must exhibit a sustainable business model
· Should have at least 4-5 years of operations at the time of application (Pilot projects will not be considered.)
· Must be able to demonstrate positive and tangible impact on low-income or underserved populations
· The nominee must be the Founder or Chief Executive Officer of a social enterprise at the time of the application.

The Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy will be held from July 26th-28th at Drexel University in Philadelphia PA. This year’s theme “Growing Our Cooperatives, Growing Our Communities” will examine strategies to maximize growth and development inside of cooperatives and in the cooperative movement while maintaining cooperatives’ democratic values. In addition to the a full slate of workshops, discussions and panels and on cooperative mechanics, development and finances from expert developers and worker-owners from across the country this year’s conference will feature workshops such as: Planning for Development: Strategic Planning and Goal Setting in the cooperative context Scaling Democracy: Transitioning between structures to maintain workplace democracy Changing States: Moving from “maintenance” to development in an established cooperative.
